Geography

Our Geography curriculum is centred around  our children’s knowledge and understanding of the wider world and community around them. Through developing a sense of place, geography inspires a curiosity and appreciation of the environment. Our children are equipped with knowledge of diverse places and people. Through exploration and collaborative learning, they develop skills for life in observing, communicating and comparing what they learn about the world around them.

Within EYFS, children begin to develop their geographical knowledge by exploring features of our school and Nursery.  Children have rich opportunities to make use of school grounds to enhance and apply their skills as geographers. Throughout the year, children observe and discuss the weather and seasonal changes. Children also learn about the different jobs which people do in our community.

As children move into KS1, they build on these strong foundations, developing their locational awareness, geographical skills and knowledge of physical and human geography. As well as learning about local geography, children enjoy having the opportunity to learn about different places by video calling other schools and countries around the world.

Mapping it out

In Foundation Stage we read the book 'Martha Maps it out' and discussed how maps are used. The children then used blocks and resources to make their own maps. Outside we used the large blocks to make a map on a larger scale using pictures of our local area on the blocks. We have also been discussing our homes and making models of them using pictures of our own front door as a starting point. We used books and globes to discuss and locate different homes around the world.

Run away Gingerbread man

In Nursery Mrs Warwick's Gingerbread man ran away! We received a postcard from him telling us he wanted to explore the world. On the postcard was a tall building which we found out was the Eiffel Tower so we found out he was in France. We looked at France on our globe and found out some facts about the country. We looked at the French flag and made our own and tried some French food too. The Gingerbread man has sent us some daily updates which we have enjoyed.

Ahhh Pirates  ☠️

Reception have been learning all about pirates. They looked at how pirates use symbols on their treasure maps and made their own.

Year 1 celebrated St Andrew's Day! They had delicious shortbread for snack and built famous landmarks.
