Science

Autumn Term 2

In this half term we will be looking at the use of everyday materials. The children will identify and compare the use of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses. They will also find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.

We will be doing lots of exploring in our local environment to find objects and discover what they are made of. The children will then explore and investigate what materials would make an effective boat to link into our exploration of the Titanic.

Exploring everyday objects and their materials.

Child led activity stemming from a child questioning why ice wasn't as commonly seen on the sea in Maryport. This led to a short discussion about fresh water and salt water, which in turn led to us using some ice and salt in a basic investigation to see what impact the salt had on the ice. The children had lots of fun!!

Autumn Term 1

This half term we will be looking at 'Living Things and their Habitats'. We will look at our local environment and observe things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive.

We had fun today looking in the classroom and outside to identify things that are dead, living and things that have never been alive. We will be classifying our photos into the different categories later in the week and giving reasons for our choices. We will be using 'MRS GREN' to assess if the item is alive or has ever been alive.
