Materials

Science Area

From reading 'Aliens Love Underpants' in Science the children will be learning about everyday materials.

They will be investigating the following questions:

  • What materials do we have on planet Earth?
  • What materials can you use to make alien underpants?
  • What materials would make a good house for aliens to live in?
  • Why are spaceships windows made from glass not wood?
  • How can aliens stay dry in the rain?
  • Which magnetic materials will fix the spaceship door?

Why are spaceships windows made from glass not wood?

We learnt the properties: transparent, translucent and opaque. The children then used mini torches to test which materials let all the light through, some light or no light through. Finally they recorded their results.

We tested different materials to see if they were waterproof or not waterproof.

Magnetic and non-magnetic.
